Rupert Murdoch has finally had enough of Trump

After Donald Trump tried to ban the media organisations he hates the most – CNN, MS NOW and Politico – from the White House, there was surprise when Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News joined other US broadcasters in a boycott. Fox used to be slavishly pro-Trump, but here was a clear sign that Murdoch’s attitude towards the president is shifting.

To see how much Murdoch’s mind has changed, look no further than the latest column by Irwin Stelzer in the Sunday Times (proprietor, R Murdoch). Stelzer, the old warhorse of the economic right, is very close to the Digger – for years he acted as his economic adviser.

And what does one of Murdoch’s longest-standing, closest advisors write in his own flagship Sunday paper? “You don’t have to suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome, or TDS, to be revolted by President Trump’s monumental vandalisation of our beautiful capital,” writes Stelzer, “his truckling with malign dictators who play him for a fool; the unashamed self-adulation; enrichment of himself and his family; the bullying and blustering; his efforts to undermine Constitutional guardrails on the extent of executive power, and his assaults on the electoral process…”

And what could possibly have brought on this sudden Murdoch change of heart about the man in the White House? Well, if there’s one thing Rupe has always loved, it’s a winner – and now it seems, team Murdoch looks at the current man in the Oval Office he sees nothing but a stone-cold loser. “If polls and prediction models are right,” writes Stelzer, “the Democrats will win control of both houses of Congress.”

Murdoch has always loved winners. Now it seems he’s concluded that President Chump is not only a loser, but that he’s going to lose control of US policymaking to the left. It’s hard to imagine a combination Murdoch would hate more.
