Why did a Russian oligarch pay for Trump Jr’s wedding?

The happy couple insist the Kremlin-linked oligarch is simply a “dear friend”. Nothing to see here

Donald Trump Jr’s father could not, for matters of vital national interest, be at his wedding when he got hitched on a luxurious private island in the Bahamas earlier this year.

However, it has emerged that a very generous sugar daddy was in attendance – and by an incredible coincidence, this one also has close ties to Vladimir Putin!

A report by the investigative journalism site ProPublica has claimed that Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch with ties to the Kremlin, was not only at the wedding of Don Junior and Bettina Anderson, but personally coughed up the $100,000 to rent the island and a whopping $70,000 for a fireworks display. His attendance immediately followed a business trip to China with Putin.

He was one of several Russians at the island who seemed “out of place”, attendees told ProPublica. Others are said to have included Alexander Lagutin, who has held senior roles at a Russian defence contractor, and one of Kremlev’s assistants, Elena Sobel.

After the publication of the article, Don Junior and Bettina thanked their “dear friend Umar” for his “extraordinarily generous wedding gift. It’s unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister,” they said.

Kremlev, head of the Gazprom-funded and scandal-plagued International Boxing Association, was awarded the Order of Friendship by Putin shortly before Don Junior’s wedding. He has recently shared posts on Telegram flattering of Stalin and urging young women to dress in a way that “shows their femininity”.

A spokesman for Don Junior told ProPublica that “Umar is a personal friend of Don” but is “not someone he has a personal relationship with”. A spokesman for Kremlev said he “never discussed political matters with any of his American friends” and had a “friendly relationship” with Don Junior.

So there you go then – nothing whatsoever to see here.
