The Financial Times’s weekly How To Spend It supplement, aimed at the very rich, is always an eye-popping read for those of lesser means – notably its celebrity Q&A feature, The Aesthete.
Last weekend’s celeb was Sam Taylor-Wood, the Great British Artist turned director of glossy spankathon Fifty Shades Of Gray and the dire Amy Winehouse biopic Back To Black. Born in Croydon, she remains refreshingly down-to-earth.

“The best gift I’ve ever received is a 1988 Porsche 944 in mint green, from (actor husband) Aaron for my birthday,” revealed Taylor-Wood, before discussing family life with kids Angelica, Phoenix, Wylda and Romy (“in my fridge you’ll always find cornichons – Wylda gets through a jar a day”).
Other pearls of wisdom included “I’ve recently rediscovered two things that don’t go together – Negronis and running” and “Dostoevsky’s The Idiot, which I read for the first time this year, is not exactly a page-turner”.
Whoever said the rich aren’t just like the rest of us!
