One reason why David Cameron was said to be so keen to return as foreign secretary in Rishi Sunak’s government was that he was “bored shitless” after leaving Downing Street, friends briefed at the time.

Yet he appears to have had plenty to do since losing the role at the general election. Well, something must be stopping him from doing his actual job as a member of the House of Lords.

Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton has spoken in the chamber just three times since last year’s election, none of them this year. Last September, he made a brief contribution during a debate on the Holocaust memorial bill; five days later, he spoke three whole sentences in a discussion on winter fuel payments. In December he spoke out in defence of the National Citizen Service, a little remembered programme set up by one D Cameron. Other than that, not a peep.
