Looking for an exciting new job, a real professional challenge – or are you just a complete sado-masochist? Whichever it is, there’s an enticing new job being advertised on LinkedIn – the Conservative Party is looking for a new head of media.
The party, currently struggling to get a hearing for itself amid Labour’s Doctor Who-style regeneration and Reform undergoing a full-on breakdown with new financial scandals emerging daily, is “seeking an experienced political communications professional to lead the day-to-day operations of the CCHQ Press Office as Head of Media”.

The role, described as “high-profile, high-tempo and demanding” will see the victorious candidate “build and manage relationships with top-tier journalists and drive the Party’s media and digital communications strategy” and “manage major set-piece media moments, including Party Conference, press conferences, launches and other high-profile events”, meaning, presumably, not letting the set collapse mid-speech as it did for Theresa May in 2017.
The person Kemi Badenoch’s party is looking for will have “prior political experience and senior communications experience, with political communications strongly preferred”, “sound judgement and the initiative to make the right call under pressure” – i.e. not putting shadow home secretary Chris Philip on the Today programme – and, er, “a degree or equivalent experience”.

And the new Andy Coulson will also need “outstanding verbal and written communication, editing and proofreading skills”, “strong personal organisation and the ability to prioritise a demanding workload” and – and one might be forgiven if this goes without saying – “a genuine, personal commitment to the values of the Conservative Party”.
Unfortunately, one key detail is missing in the advertisement for what might be currently the mask thankless job in SW1A – the salary. It makes no mention of what the successful applicant will receive, although those with access to LinkedIn Premium will note that, of the 60 who have already applied for the position within the site so far, 33% already work at a director level – while one in 10 are at “entry level”, meaning they think saving the Tories would make for a suitable first job.
