Truss invites ridicule for the Washington Post

The short-lived former prime minister's op-ed for Jeff Bezos's newspaper did not go down well with readers

When Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and billionaire owner of the Washington
Post
, announced in February that he wanted the paper’s opinion section to focus almost solely on the issues of “personal liberties and free markets”, the Post’s opinion editor David Shipley departed the paper.

After several opinion writers followed him out of the door, people wondered what the future of op-eds in DC’s paper of record would look like.

A few weeks ago, they had their answer when the Post published a searing article with the headline “Elites killed my pro-growth agenda. Trump can’t let them stop his” – written by none other than Liz Truss with her usual incoherent ramble about how her plans were unravelled by “the entire Davos elite”, and nothing she hasn’t said many times before.

But the 4,147 comments on the article are somewhat more enlightening, as an AI summary – another recent Bezos innovation – neatly summarises.

“The comments overwhelmingly criticize Liz Truss, the former UK prime minister, for her brief and disastrous tenure, highlighting her failed economic policies and lack of credibility,” it notes. “Many commenters express disbelief and ridicule at the Washington Post for giving her a platform.”
