Truss back on tour with Trump

The short-lived ex-PM declared the president "right abour everything" as she continues her quest to be a successful podcaster

‘The Slug and Lettuce’, wrote one wag on social media at the weekend as Liz Truss, who some readers may recall was briefly prime minister of the United Kingdom, posted a picture of herself with Donald Trump at his Florida golf club.

“Right about everything,” Truss captioned her picture, tagging in the president’s handle. Trump, meanwhile, adopted the same rictus grin and half-hearted thumbs-up he does for all his fan pics, rather suggesting he had no idea who the former PM was. Lucky man.

Truss is increasingly seeking to align herself with Trump and the wider MAGA movement as she tries to relaunch herself as a hard right podcaster and influencer. She endorsed him before the 2024 election and travelled to Washington before his inauguration in a red ‘Make America Great Again’ hat despite, awkwardly, not having been invited.

Last year, she was even reported to have suggested to US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent that Trump could take advantage of his Scottish heritage once he leaves the White House to take British citizenship and run for office in the UK, potentially even becoming prime minister.

Not that any of it is helping The Liz Truss Show, her YouTube show which continues to attract pathetically small figures, not least due to the fact that she struggles to attract any but the most obscure online right wingers to feature on it.

Recently, Truss pulled in just 1,000 views for her interview with James Taylor of the Heartland Institute, a US think tank which argues smoking is not harmful, and Lois Perry, who was leader of UKIP for less than a month in 2024. Two weeks ago, she recorded an episode called ‘Britain’s Corrupt Media Exposed’ with Dan Wootton, sacked by GB News after giggling over sexist comments, and Mike Graham, who left Talk over allegations of a racist social media post. Another recent ‘star’ guest, pulling in 1,300 views, was GB News host Will Kingston.

Couldn’t Truss have persuaded her ‘friend’ Trump to have guested? At least somebody might have watched that…
