“Sian Berry, Green MP, is wearing trainers to the Commons,” fumed Kate Ferguson, the Sun on Sunday’s political editor, on X this week. “Shows a sad disrespect for the Palace of Westminster which she is so lucky to work in.”
Ferguson’s sartorial musings, however, prompted nothing but mockery on even Elon Musk’s hellsite. Many pointed out that, while riled by Berry’s footwear, Ferguson had had nothing to say about Jacob Rees-Mogg lounging languidly with his eyes closed across the government frontbenches in 2019. (Although when the ex-minister launched his Discovery+ reality show Meet The Rees-Moggs last year, she was quick to rave “that’s series two sorted”. Alas it was quickly cancelled after one.)

Nor, indeed, had she ever criticised dishevelled former PM Boris Johnson – or “Hurricane Boris” as fan Ferguson likes to dub him – who frequently looked like he’d been dragged to the Commons through a bush.
Others pointed out that Berry wasn’t “lucky” to work in the Commons – she won the Brighton Pavilion seat with a 14,290 majority – while even fellow political hacks joined in the ridicule, with ITV’s Romilly Weeks posting a picture of her and her colleagues’ footwear in Westminster that evening showing them all sporting trainers.
Still, at least nobody was disrespectful enough to question what is really more embarrassing: wearing trainers in the Commons, or dating hapless shadow transport secretary Richard ‘Billericay Dicky’ Holden, as the Sun on Sunday’s political editor does.
