The right wing Christmas whinges come round earlier every year

It seems to come round earlier every year – the whinges from right wingers about festive celebrations not being Christian enough.

The latest comes from Naomi Wolf, the American writer and conspiracy theorist, who has taken umbrage at the traditional Christmas tree in London’s Trafalgar Square. Taking to, inevitably, X, Wolf reposted a video from a user contrasting its relatively restrained lighting with that of one in Warsaw and claiming somehow that it proved mayor Sadiq Khan cared for neither the city nor Christmas.

“Listen to the sad clapping in London,” bemoaned Wolf. “Is it not obvious to you that the UK Christmas tree was intentionally barely lit or decorated? Remember the lavish tree decorations of the recent past? This is deliberate. Slow but deliberate.”

Leaving aside that “the UK Christmas tree” suggests the country only has one, many fellow X users waded in to point that the tree was an annual gift from Norway to mark the UK’s support during World War II and it is, as with every year, decorated in the relatively spartan Norwegian style with just 500 lights. Still, it gave Wolf a break from her usual ranting about Covid vaccines, so at least that’s something.
