The Brexit-backing newspapers have had their say over Keir Starmer’s declining to get involved in the bombing of Iran, and the message is clear: now we have Taken Back Control, why are we refusing to be unquestioningly subservient to a mad American president?
“I am very disappointed in Keir,” ran the front page of the Daily Telegraph, backing Donald Trump’s bemusement at the PM’s reticence in allowing the US to use US bases to strike Iran. The Daily Express, similarly, led with “Trump is ‘very disappointed’ in Sir Keir over Iran help”.
The Daily Mail went predictably further with the frankly crackers “US lambasts ‘hand-wringing, pearl-clutching’ Starmer as Kemi says he’s ‘scared’ of his own voters”, a problem at least Badenoch hasn’t got to worry about, what with not having any.

But the most inventive coverage went to the Sun, whose US-based editor-at-large Harry Cole finally made himself useful aside from his little-watched YouTube show Harry Cole Saves The West to apparently speak to the president himself. “TRUMP SKEWERS KEIR,” ran the headline, “Dithering Starmer is pandering to Muslim voters by not joining my Iran blitz, slams Trump as war of words escalates”.
And the actual wording of the conversation between the pair which warranted such a stark headline? “Asked about accusations that Sir Keir is pandering to Muslim voters for political reasons, the President said ‘it could be’.” An absolute slam-dunk from the president known to be such a granular expert in UK voting demographics!
Cole later appeared on Times Radio to side with the US president in his “war of words” with Starmer. “He used a wonderful turn of phrase – it’s ‘woke island’,” gushed the easily impressed Sun man.
Meanwhile, Harry Cole Saves The West continues to draw Sun readers to its YouTube channel in their dozens. His analysis of Trump’s State of the Union Address, conducted with little-known right wing pundit Chloe Trapanotto, has been viewed 369 times at the the time of writing, and five days after being published – about the average home attendance of Isthmian League Division One North side Lowestoft Town.
