Now the loony right turns its fire on… the poppy appeal

Esther McVey and Laurence Fox are among those convinced the Royal British Legion has gone "woke"

The newest culture war being waged by Britain’s loony right is against those leftist firebrands at the Royal British Legion, organisers of the annual poppy charity appeal that raises money for military veterans, serving personnel and their families.

Former Tory minister Esther McVey is among those foomin’. She wrote on X: “Bought my poppy as I do every year… however, horrified to discover The Royal British Legion (RBL) has a Head of Diversity & Inclusion at a wage of about £65k – that’s a lot of poppies to sell just for that non-job wage! All the money should be going to veterans not on politically correct non-jobs.”

Meanwhile, tiresome outrage merchant Laurence Fox told his followers: “Haven’t bought a poppy yet this year… Can’t bring myself to contribute to the head of diversity, equity and inclusions salary. Woke kills everything. I refuse to support it.”

The RBL believes that the role criticised by McVey, Fox and hundreds of others is vital in organising support for minority ethnic, LGBTQ+ and disabled veterans and serving personnel who may not come forward for help from the RBL because they mistakenly believe it is not for them. But obviously a failed minister and failed actor know better.

Meanwhile, Fox has attempted to revive his moribund music career with a tribute song to assassinated far right activist Charlie Kirk, which features Lozza’s trademark flat vocals and cringeworthy lyrics like “From a single crack of a shot was when your talking just stopped”.

Among the heartfelt reactions on social media were: “This is beautiful mate. I got to know Charlie pretty well towards the end and he was always talking about his love of abysmal dogshit.”
