Jeremy Clarkson reaps what he sows (literally)

The TV farmer worries his harvest is 'fucked'. Has he met the Sunday Times columnist who has rubbished all efforts to combat climate change?

“Harvest already fucked,” wrote Jeremy Clarkson on Instagram at the weekend, underneath a screenshot of a BBC weather report showing the scorching temperatures in Chipping Norton, close to where he farms. “May as well just enjoy it now.”

The forecast for the Oxfordshire village showed a high of 29C on Sunday, with heats of up to 33C forecast for the days to follow. The National Farmers’ Union has warned the UK Government that Britain could face food shortages because of the long warm and dry spell.

It is all due to the overheating climate, of course, although some prominent commentators who have pretty much made a career of pooh-poohing the whole thing and mocking anyone actually suggesting measures to mitigate it still profess not to care.

Like the Sunday Times columnist who, as recently as January this year wrote a piece titled ‘Net zero is unhuman. Who wants to be sad?’, explaining how attempting to stop the planet from burning to a shred “flies in the face of all that we are. It’s unhuman”.

“This is what Ed Sillyband doesn’t seem to understand,” wrote the tedious controversialist of the then energy secretary, “He fires up his adenoids every day and struts off to work, genuinely believing that we’ll all embrace his carbon-free initiatives. But we won’t because without exception, they all make our lives more difficult. And who wants that?

“If I wanted to go to Scotland this afternoon, I’d get in my car and set off. Maybe I’d have to fill up with petrol but that would only take a couple of minutes and then, in the time it takes to play one Genesis track, I’d be McThere. In a Miliband eco-car, I’d have to charge it up all the time and the journey would take weeks. That’s worse.

“Nobody wants an ugly wife or an ugly car and no one wants to take a holiday in an ugly resort. So why would you want to live in a house made ugly by solar panels? And why would you want to eat a sausage that has no pig meat in it?”

The writer of this column, you have probably worked out, is one Mr J Clarkson of Oxfordshire, currently wondering why his harvest is fucked.
