Is the Daily Telegraph secretly in favour of Britain returning to the EU? It seems unlikely – just last week crackpot columnist Sherelle Jacobs wrote about how “It has finally dawned on Strasbourg’s blob that the European dream is dead”, while Daniel Hannan fretted about how “Starmer isn’t taking us back into the EU. It’s actually worse than that”.
But a video posted by the paper yesterday told a slightly different story. Presented by its Europe editor James Crisp – a mini Boris Johnson who, last year, dipped into nominative determinism to claim Brussels was plotting to ban smoky bacon crisps – it detailed how the bloc was secretly planning “more Europe” with a boost in defence spending and accession for Ukraine and Albania.

But what’s that 50 seconds in? Crisp shows a map of Europe with the EU members highlighted in blue – and there, in the top left-hand corner, is the United Kingdom like it’s 2016!
“Welcome to Brussels, the home of the EU institutions and also one day, perhaps, the capital of a new super-Europe,” frets Crisp, who has perhaps not got his colleague Jacobs’s memo that the European dream is dead. Sounds good to us!
