How far can down the rabbit hole can Liz Truss fall?

The short-lived former prime minister's YouTube show is going into some dark (and increasingly weird) conspiracy theories

It is with some regret that we must inform you that, despite everything, The Liz Truss Show is still a going concern – and the mayfly-like former prime minister is disappearing even further down the conspiracist rabbit hole.

Truss – who some readers may recall was once the head of government of a G7 nation – is leaning into ever more hard right fringe theories – to the extent that the latest episode of her little-watched YouTube show is entitled ‘George Soros, NGOs and the Blob: How Britain Was Captured’.

In the episode Truss is joined by Charlotte Gill, a former Conservative Home and GB News hack who now peddles her conspiracing online (“after going down various rabbit holes, I became fascinated in how taxpayers were being charged for all things woke”, she says on her website).

And how far down the ex-PM has gone! Truss begins the episode by laying out how “Soros-backed NGO activists have systematically captured the government, corporates and media of Western nations.

“The priorities of normal people like earning money, getting on the housing ladder, a good education for their children and being safe from crime have gone out the window. Instead, these nutters have focused the state and even the private sector on causes like net zero carbon, transgender ideology and open borders.”

She goes on: “They’ve covered their tracks by throwing mud at the right, accusing us of the very crimes they are guilty of. The public has been fed the lie that it’s conservatives that are funded by foreign interests and rich billionaires. The truth is the opposite.

“The global left has far outspent the right and they’ve been coordinated and organised about it. Activist billionaires like George Soros, Abigail Disney and Michael Bloomberg have supported networks of organisations, training camps for the next generation of globalists and influence campaigns that have skewed the entire corporate world.” Lawks!

Gill goes on to lay out how the Arts and Humanities Research Council “gets hundreds of millions each year, and it was funding studies into gay porn”, attacks such bodies as the Quakers and Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and obsesses weirdly about a shadowy building on Pelican Street in Bethnal Green, East London (“this factory for Commies”).

Pelican Street appears to link a lot of the interconnected people Gill dubs “the watermelons”: Jeremy Corbyn, Labour MP Nadia Whittome, Green Carla Denyer, pro-migration campaigner Zoe Gardner, ITV news editor Paul Brand, Carol Vorderman, Uncle Tom Cobley and all.

“The gauntlet has been laid down,” says Truss as she wraps up the 47 minutes of complete and utter head-banging madness. “Charlotte’s Web has exposed the truth about the networks who wield huge power.” Alas for Liz, we all remember what happened to poor old Charlotte.
