With the MAGA crowd tying itself up in knots over quite what the justification is for Donald Trump to unilaterally snatch Greenland from the hands of Denmark, here’s a novel one – it’s to prevent the territory largely populated by seals from becoming a collapsed narco state.
Randy Fine, a Republican congressman whose preferred soubriquet for himself – The Hebrew Hammer – is unaccountably even sillier than his actual name, has introduced a bill which, if passed, would formally make Greenland the US’s 51st state.

“The fact of the matter is that Greenland will become part, somehow, and the question is, will it become part of America or will it become part of Russia or China?” he told Fox News. “We need to make sure that we assert our dominance over the western hemisphere, a Monroe Doctrine that goes back 200 years in this country.
“The last thing we need is Greenland to become another Venezuela where we have huge problems which we have to deal with in the future.” It was “a great point,” the host, Maria Bartiromo, told him.
It is possible Fine’s lack of knowledge of other countries could be affecting him. Last year he introduced a “No Sharia Act” to Congress, seeking to prohibit the implementation of sharia law in the US as he had “seen what has happened in the UK”. Sharia law has no legal status in the UK, just as Greenlandic seals are not about to start mass-producing cocaine.
