Eamonn Holmes and a non-scandal scandal at GB News

Lots of free publicity followed a remark that seemingly offended no-one - while the channel’s viewers said things that really were offensive

GB News host Eamonn Holmes generated more publicity for the channel on August 21, when he was ‘forced’ to apologise for saying a guest might have looked “Oriental” after a facelift.

Though appearing to generate no actual complaints from offended wokies accidentally watching the home of far right news, opinion and conspiracy theories, a Partridgesque exchange between Holmes and former Atomic Kitten singer Kerry Katona was picked up by the usual right wing news outlets, who love to portray this sort of thing as “political correctness gone mad”.

Holmes initially asked Katona: “Are you happy with the eyes? And you don’t look Oriental or anything, do you?” Later, he implied that he had been told to say sorry, telling viewers: “Apparently you’re not allowed to describe someone as looking Oriental or… I don’t know how I would end up describing Kerry Katona if her eyes change shape.

“I don’t know how I’m going to say ‘does she look like someone from some other country in the East of the world?’… The world is ridiculous. How you have to apologise for people… if she painted herself or… I don’t know, I can’t get into this. But anyway.”

The reclusive Katona later broke her silence to declare that she “wasn’t offended in any way, shape or form” – seemingly much like everyone else. The Mail reported her defence of Holmes alongside the revelation that “Kerry appeared in good spirits on Thursday afternoon as she departed the Oxford Natural Longevity & Aesthetics Clinic in Alderley Edge, Cheshire after receiving an Abarghouei vitamin C facial”, together with several not-too-spontaneous-looking photos of her at the clinic.

So, plenty of free publicity from a non-story for Holmes, for GB News, for Kerry Katona and for the Oxford Natural Longevity & Aesthetics Clinic in Alderley Edge, Cheshire. As for something really offensive, what about comments from GB News viewers after Holmes, in another interview, suggested that Britain should house refugees from Gaza?

The Daily Express reported: “This sparked major fury among viewers, including one who raged: ‘Oh shut up Eamonn we don’t want them here’ as another simply announced: ‘Switching over!!’

“One stated: ‘We want nobody from Gaza, we cannot take in the world, don’t make stupid comments’. ‘A lot of these countries have always been basket cases we are not here to support them,” added another.

“One viewer complained: ‘How about our country for a change what about our children who’s parents are struggling what about our hospitals being taken over by illegal. Shut up and not OUR PROBLEM!!!!’ Another questioned: ‘And how many hundreds of ‘immediate family’ will come over with them and how many of them are hamas terrorists!’’

Perhaps the next apology on GB News should be for the racist opinions of its viewers…
