Joe Biden

For liberals, good news has been a long time coming. So don’t feel inhibited about celebrating two key moments, says IAN DUNT. There’s been some kind of glitch in the Matrix. We seem to have ended up in a tolerable reality. When we woke up last Wednesday morning, things were operating as normal. Joe Biden looked […]

Brexiteer Kate Hoey has claimed that opponents of Boris Johnson’s Internal Market bill – which would override international law – are stabbing “in the back of the people of Northern Ireland”. The former Labour MP urged peers to ignore the comments of president-elect Joe Biden, claiming the original Brexit deal has “sold out” the people […]

Iain Duncan Smith has become the latest Brexiteer to worsen relations between Boris Johnson and Joe Biden’s administration, by telling the president-elect that Brexit “has nothing to do with him”. Over the weekend fellow European Research Group member John Redwood was criticised for sending a “warning letter” to Biden over Brexit, claiming they have a […]

A Brexiteer MP has penned what pro-Brexit newspapers have described as a ‘warning letter’ to president-elect Joe Biden over Brexit. John Redwood said he accepted that Biden now has a “clear mandate” in America, but he also claimed there was a “larger percentage mandate” for the EU referendum result, despite both equating to around 52% of […]

Joe Biden could force Boris Johnson to sign up to a Brexit deal with the EU in his first contact with the British prime minister. British diplomats have conceded that the PM is likely to be far down the list on people the president-elect telephones after his election win, but when he does the dialogue […]

Joe Biden is expected to call European leaders Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron early on as he speaks with politicians across the world in the coming days. Johnson is hoping to build bridges with Biden after a Democratic source claimed that there was “no special relationship with Boris Johnson” following the election win. But sources close […]

Keir Starmer has reflected on Joe Biden’s win in America by warning the Labour Party that only a “broad coalition” can help recreate the win in Britain in 2024. Starmer used a Guardian article to point out a series of observations from Biden’s win in America, and his success in denying Donald Trump a second win. In […]

Environment secretary George Eustice has admitted that post-Brexit trade talks with America may have to start again following Joe Biden’s win, before claiming a deal is no longer “critical” to the economy. Eustice said it could be possible to pick up on US trade negotiations with Biden’s administration where they were left with Donald Trump, […]

Nigel Farage has been mocked after complaining about the result of the US election, which saw his good friend Donald Trump voted out of the White House. Farage’s wager came in response to Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal lawyer, who had staked $10,000 on his former boss not winning a second term. Farage said he had […]

Boris Johnson has yet to get in touch with US president-elect Joe Biden after laying out the case for a close UK alliance with the new administration. “The United States is our closest and most important ally, and that has been the case president after president, prime minister after prime minister – it won’t change,” […]

Joe Biden has promised to be a “president for all Americans” after topping the 270 electoral college votes needed for victory over Donald Trump in the US presidential race. The former vice-president was called as the winner of Pennsylvania on Saturday, meaning he has an insurmountable lead in the race for the White House. Biden, […]

US comedian Stephen Colbert has given a passionate speech denouncing Donald Trump and urged Americans to “stay cool” amid rising tensions over voter fraud. In an eight-minute-long monologue posted on Twitter, Colbert said the president had been acting like a “sad, frightened fraud” after alleging the US election had been rigged. On Thursday, major US networks stopped broadcasting […]

STEVE ANGLESEY on how it doesn’t matter if Trump is in The White House in January as the intolerance, rage and loathing he has boiled up will remain. Everyone was surprised but them. As America’s election headed to VAR with the pollsters having got it wrong again, members of a British pro-Trump group on Facebook had […]

A Brexiteer has fumed about the possibility of Joe Biden entering the White House, claiming the loss of Donald Trump will hit the UK, and that any economic damage will be the fault of Remainers. Express commentator Paul Baldwin sparked anger from pro-EU campaigners after he said it was the “rabble of Remainer cohorts” who would […]

Boris Johnson’s “toxic” nature is likely to put a strain on a Joe Biden presidency, a prominent Democrat adviser has warned. Max Bergmann, a senior fellow with the Centre for American Progress, told the Times that Johnson’s credibility has fallen across the pond as a result of his Brexit support, and the administration could turn […]

Joe Biden was just one battleground state away from securing enough electoral college votes to achieve what he called a ‘victory for the American people’ early on Thursday, as Donald Trump pursued legal avenues to the White House. After securing victories in Wisconsin and Michigan, the Democrat had 264 electoral college votes and needed to […]

America’s battered and bruised democracy has taken another beating. And that means pain for the rest of the world, says JOHN KAMPFNER. A month or so before the US election, European officials were under no illusions. They were wargaming scenarios around legal challenges and civil disobedience in the event of Joe Biden securing the votes […]

JAMES BALL gives his initial analysis on the US election as the results pour in.  In Hamilton – a musical many of us have watched and rewatched during our pandemic confinement – there is a moment shortly after America wins its war of independence when an aghast and outright baffled King George III has one […]

The UK has been warned that it might not secure a post-Brexit trade deal with America regardless of who wins the presidential election. Former Labour foreign secretary David Miliband said that a deal with Boris Johnson’s government is just as unlikely if Donald Trump is returned to the White House. He refuted suggestions that the […]

Twitter has slapped a warning on a tweet by Donald Trump suggesting the elections was being “stolen” from him. The social media organisation said it had placed a warning on Trump’s tweet “for making a potentially misleading claim about an election”. “This action is in line with our Civic Integrity Policy,” the firm’s @TwitterSafety account said. […]

Joe Biden has told the nation it will need to be “patient” as the count of votes for 2020 US presidential election continues to tighten. Biden, the Democratic Party nominee, told supporters in Delaware “we are going to win this” but warned patience would be needed, and the election would not be over until every […]

Many polls gave Joe Biden a strong lead in the race for the White House but Election Night is giving a closer race than many expected.  The Democratic nominee was thought to have a comfortable lead over the Republican incumbent. But close results in a number of swing states have made the path to the […]

Dear America, We all know Trump’s only campaign tactic is to stop people voting. He doesn’t want you to vote, because he knows that if you do, he will lose. He won four years ago because people that didn’t like Trump and didn’t like Clinton, stayed at home. You cannot afford to stay at home, […]

An adviser to Joe Biden, tipped to become the next UK ambassador to the US, has issued a warning over Brexit – saying in almost every area it would have negative consequences for his country. Anthony Gardner, a former American ambassador to the EU, told an audience in Germany that Brexit was the “biggest own-goal” […]

Even if Joe Biden seemingly triumphs on November 3, the question of who will be US president may remain unanswered, with Donald Trump having raised the prospect of a legal battle. Winning the last election did not stop Trump from questioning its legitimacy, and the nation being in the grip of the coronavirus pandemic only […]

Nigel Farage has pledged to bet £10,000 on Donald Trump winning a second term in the White House, claiming Trump would prove pundits wrong as he had done in 2016. This comes as Farage fights allegations he broke US quarantine rules to attend a Donald Trump rally in Arizona Wednesday night. The Brexit Party leader claimed he was […]

Mitch Benn says Joe Biden’s altruism beats Donald Trump’s cynicism. I do realise that I’ve been talking about America a lot just recently (and that this paper is called The New European) but I feel I should cast at least a nervous nod across the pond this week as this will be the last column […]

With passions at fever-pitch, many Americans believe the November 3 election is make or break for the US, regardless of whether they back Donald Trump or Joe Biden. But whether the Republican business tycoon remains in the White House or if his Democratic challenger ousts him will also have a profound effect on the rest […]

Will the future be bright – or will it be orange? These are the key times for the American election results for those watching in the UK. Britons have got used to waking up the morning after the US elections and knowing right away whether to happily spring out of bed for the TV remote […]

Rikha Sharma Rani looks at whether Donald Trump could lose a section of his religious support to Joe Biden. On a Monday afternoon in June, Donald Trump stood holding a bible in front of St John’s Episcopal Church in Washington DC. He turned it over to look at the spine – seemingly checking to see that […]

Bonnie Greer looks at Sam Elliott’s adverts for Joe Biden, which aim to sway Donald Trump voters away from the president. In the United States, the various voting demographics are labelled in terms that most British citizens, and just about anyone else, might find offensive. So, there are ‘white suburban women with college degrees’, and […]

James Ball looks at how a Donald Trump defeat would effect the USA, and the world. The consensus is in: there is something like an 85% to 90% chance that Democratic candidate Joe Biden will win the presidential election next week and begin the countdown to his inauguration in January 2021. But if people have strong […]
